"Kado the GSP at 1 year old in Montana after hiking up a mountain and setting up camp. I have always loved German Shorthairs because of their temperament and activity level, but was very surprised when I first got Kado. Being that she was my first dog I was unaware just how demanding training a GSP would be, but I caught on quickly. I got Kado when she was 2 months old from a local farmer, she was not potty-trained and lacked discipline. After I realized she needed 1. A confident pack leader (not just a friend), 2. consistency with training and 3. lots of exercise, she became well-behaved and stopped chewing on my favorite shoes and the sides of my house walls. Down the road from where I live there is a 2.4 mile horse trail with a pond and ample prairie fields where I take Kado everyday to run and swim. Some days she requires to run up and down the trail twice and some only 1/2. What I found out is that she is most happy when I invest the time to run with her, as she dashes between the fields and the pond I'll throw sticks for her to retrieve, or place pheasant feathers around so she can seek them out."

When at home Kado got into the habit of entertaining herself when I couldn't, like throwing chew toys and bones down the stairs then run down, fetch, run up and repeat. I have found that she will let me know (by getting in my face and whimpering) if she is bored. Kado is smart and stubborn and will do anything to please me, but on the flip side she has shown signs of anxiety if I am gone for more than two days which has worried me since I am preparing for deployment. I did, however, find a wonderful home for her while I am gone. They have 2 other GSP's and that seems to keep Kado socially occupied and anxiety free."

For anyone looking into getting a GSP, make sure you are willing to dedicate a lot of your time to physical training and mental stimulation. They are worth every second!"
